Canned pumpkin (without the sweetening and spices for pie filling) is
"the great equalizer" recommended by many vets for constipation or
diarrhea. Essentially, the pumpkin will firm up loose stool or soften
hard stool. It provides bulk and "regulates" the amount of water in the
stool. Canned pumpkin is commonly recommended for overweight dogs since
the bulk helps the dog feel full while the pumpkin does not put a lot
of sugar/calories into the system.

Since hard stool is not particularly common n ferrets, I would wonder
if perhaps a partial obstruction may be slowing down your ferret's
digestion. High dose of pimkin or vaseline over the course of a couple
of days can help pass something that may be obstructing your ferrets
digestive tract. You should ask you vet about this possibility and
perhaps try a treatment with high does of a lubricant
(pumpkin/vaseline) that may help your ferret pass any potential
blockages.
