Patricia,

For the past 6 years, MaFF (Massachusetts Ferret Friends) has held a
Ferret Giving Tree Party, where members and guests bring items to be
sent to shelters listed on the Ferret Giving Tree. Two years ago, our
shipping costs were $260!

I agree with you that the $260 could have done much to add more items
for each shelter. Last year we requested Gift Cards/Certificates to
various stores (WalMart, Target, PETCO, Totally Ferret, etc.) as well
as Gift Cards that could be used to pay down vet expenses. Our shipping
charges were reduced considerably and we were able to give more back to
the shelters.

I realize that there is a fee for a Money Card (VISA, MasterCard,
etc.), but even a Postal Money Order can be used by the shelter for
supplies and such. With most shelters dealing with rising vet costs, I
would suggest a Money Card or Postal Money Order to be filled in by the
shelter at the time of receipt. This way they can use it for past due
vet bills, Melatonin, or various meds.

Hope this helps you in choosing gifts for the Ferret Giving Tree this
year.
