Just wanted to let you all know my boy died peacefully in my arms at
the vet's this afternoon after battling insulinoma for over 1.5 years.
He was 8 years old and lived the longest of my eight ferrets. The
proglycem stopped being effective, and he was having little seizures
and biting his tongue. I didn't want the seizures to get out of control
and did not want him to suffer. He deserved better. He was my little
pal. He loved to go for walks and rides. He will be missed. He was the
most vocal ferret I ever had, but he had not talked this past year. He
was a hob and never had adrenal disease but he did get rotten
insulinoma, and he was a trooper until the end. He is my last ferret.
I can't afford the vet bills or the emotional drain of taking care of
elderly sick ferrets. Most ferrets require surgery at some point, and
it is not $200 anymore. Last surgery Nexus had was $700. I have three
goats and I'm going to concentrate on them. I may get a small dog,
something I have never had as an adult. If I need a ferret fix, I'll
go to the shelter and play with ferrets there.
My heart goes out to any of you who are confronted with the decision
to let your little angel go. It is heartwrenching, and I had to wait
around all day after making the decision last nite. I didn't want to
drive the 45 minutes each way to my ferret specialist vet, when there
is a nice vet in town here, but I had to wait for a 3:30 p.m.
appointment and had all day to think about it and dread it. As it says
in Revelation, "the lion will lay down with the lamb," and "there will
be no more pain and suffering." I'm sure my boy is at peace. I only
wish I was.
