I recently ordered another Ferret Nation cage to go with our current
fleet. It is nice to see the company has been accommodating in their
safety changes to the shelves. It was also a pleasant surprise to find
three ramp covers in the box.
The biggest concern I have is the odor that came within the box. When
unwrapping parts, I found a film of dust, dirt or some substance that
seemed to be the source of the odor. It was covering the plastic trays
and shelves which were inside plastic bags.
It was necessary to take the constructed cage outside and let it air. I
also took the time to wash the trays and cage down with soap and water.
With the nice weather we saw in WNY this weekend, Roamy and the BOING
Bros.; Junior and Buddy, benefitted from the need to clean in the great
outdoors!! They had such a grand time with noses to the air, digging
and running at high ferret speeds. There's nothing like a cool spring
breeze and exercise to tire out a ferret. After bringing the cage back
inside, I found the odor still lingering and opted to try a vinegar and
water spray. The ramp covers had the same odor so I made sure to wash
those as well. They seem to still have an odor that makes me think of
oil. We'll see how the cage smells tomorrow.
If you are ordering a FN cage in the future, be aware you may want to
construct it outside and be sure to check your pieces for an substance.
I also ordered the FN cage cover - I am disappointed with it in
comparison to the MF cover which also fits FN cages. It has several
flaps and was harder to put on the cage than the MF cover. It also
doesn't' have the venting on the sides like MF. The venting also
allows me to peek inside and see what's happening without disturbing
the ferrets with a lift of the cover.
I'd be curious if anyone purchasing a FN cage recently ran into this
problem. They are made in China and I can't help but think of the
drywall that the US imported from China a few years ago. When used in
home construction in the US many families moving into the homes became
ill.
Let me know.
Thanks, Cathy
