Black-Footed Ferrets: From Box to Burrow
Since the mid 80's the SCBI has served as a breeding center for one
of the most endangered animals in the world, the black footed ferret.
Through a multi-partner recovery program this solitary, nocturnal
mammal is making a comeback. Thought to be extinct until a small
population was discovered in Wyoming in 1981, thousands of black-footed
ferrets have been produced at AZA institutions and the US Fish and
Wildlife Service's National Black-footed Ferret Conservation Center.
Reintroduction of the species began in 1991 (Wyoming) and has since
spanned to 7 other states as well as Mexico and Canada. The return
of the Black-footed Ferret has been nothing short of magical! Paul
Marinari, Fish and Wildlife Biologist and Director of the National BFF
Conservation Center will present information on how black-footed ferret
kits make it from captive breeding to reintroduction.
