When I read this story of Felicia the Working Ferret, I thought the
name sounded familiar and I was right. About 17 years ago, we moved
to New Mexico from Texas because my husbands job with the Department
of Energy Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. It is a facility that stores
Transuranic nuclear waste underground. We had ferrets for several years
before the move and I helped out with a ferret shelter in Texas before
the move. When one of the employees that worked with my husband found
out we had ferrets, he gave him a postcard from the American Museum of
Atomic Energy Oakridge Tennessee. I'm going to try to post a link to
the photograph I took of this postcard. Just in case it doesn't work,
the front of the card shows a gentleman holding a little dark ferret
in a harness and a leash. The back reads:
American Museum of Atomic Energy Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Felicia Ferret
is one of the stars of the animal menagerie at the American Museum of
Atomic Energy in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. With her mate, Felix, and their
offspring, Felicia shows some of the uses of animals in nuclear
research. The free museum is operated for the U.S. Energy Research
and Development Administration by Oak Ridge Associated Universities.
