Hello ferret friends,
The Ferret Inn has been contacted by a man who has 4 male ferrets, at
least 5 yrs. old. His daughter originally had seven ferrets. She was
evicted and her father took the 6 ferrets. One died very young having
never been vetted. He has held them for 5 years. They have been living
in a cage, in his garage, in a rental property for the past year. He
moved them into the garage as his roommates complained of the smell.
Two have recently died in the cage, leaving 4. This man is ignorant,
regarding any kind of ferret care and they have never had their ears
and nails done much less having been to the vet. When I explained the
amount of care and expense required by anyone who would take them in
may be facing, he said, "Stop right there, I will just let them die
on their own."

My main concern, of course, is insulinoma and adrenal disease and a
blocked prostate. He said one has hair loss.

These ferrets need your help. Ideally they should stay together,
however, I can see placing them as two pairs, or if need be, singles.

I have not taken them into the shelter as my space is limited. If I
can get a commitment from any of you to agree to take one or all of
them, sight unseen, I will bring them into the shelter and vet them,
if necessary. They will all need to be ADV tested, have blood glucose
tests done, ear mite checks, Revolution and have melatonin implants,
which I can do at the shelter. Ideally they should all be vetted,
have blood work and deslorelin implants.

Please consider going outside your comfort level to help these
neglected boys, and give them the opportunity to be a ferret in a
loving home. Because of their age, they surely don't have that much
longer and deserve at least that from us, those who truly care. For
FML folks out there, or shelters who can help, I am sure transportation
can be coordinated if you are willing to take them in, especially for
the eastern region.

We do not have a description of these ferrets as the guy who has them
cannot give a reliable description nor can he tell if any are bonded
so we must take our chances. We are maintaining contact with this man,
and will take in the ferrets if we determine they are in immediate
jeopardy.
