With amputations antibiotics are needed for a long enough run
afterward, and it is very, very important to leave enough soft tissue
padding in place. Ferrets are quite prone to tissue retraction and if
the bone is later exposed then another surgery will be needed to avoid
infection, so leaving a nice pad of soft tissue the first time around
is really the way to go.
