I am pleased to announce the names of Cyan's six kits at the
Smithsonian Zoo's Conservation Research Center:
The girls: Sky, Sapphire, Aqua
The boys: Cobalt, Navy, Indigo
Ferret keeper Lawrence Layman chose which names were for the girls and
which for the boys. :-)
We raised $385 for BFF research at the CRC!
On October 14, the kits will be transferred to Colorado where they will
learn how to hunt prairie dogs in the conditioning pens in preparation
for release into the wild! Don't know yet where they will be released,
will let everyone know when I find out.
A record 39 kits were born at the CRC this summer. Over 300 kits were
born at all the breeding facilities, with an unusually large number
of big litters this year. No one is sure why, but everyone is happy!
In other news, Friday, after about 60 years of absence from the
country, 34 black-footed ferrets were released in Grasslands National
Park, in Saskatchewan, Canada. About half the ferrets came from the
Toronto Zoo's breeding facility, the rest from various US facilities.
