Well, actually, they used to neuter pre-pubescent male humans on a
regular basis in Italy, to create "castratos", male sopranos. They
seemed to have pretty long lives (but then, they were well cared for
and their lives were very enriched by the arts and profession). Since
they were usually purchased or donated by their impoverished families
with few prospects and too many mouths to feed, they certainly enjoyed
a better life and longetivity then they would have otherwise. Hmm,
notice some parallels to ferret here? But it still doesn't answer
the question - was it worth it to the individual?
