I agree with wolfy about naming pets - to me, naming anything or
anybody is a big deal! You don't want to name someone who doesn't
match the name they're given. You also don't want to give them a name
you don't really like. I think most pet owners are fickle about naming
their pets. I've named all my family's pets since I can remember
(except my sister's hamster) and I would always get made fun of because
I turned it into such a process! When I new I was getting my chihuahua
5 yrs ago, I agonized for weeks over what I'd name her. When I held her
for the first time, I instantly knew: her name was Cricket. And she IS
Cricket! She's black and tiny and she hops all over the place. She even
"sings" quietly at night while she's sleeping.
My ferrets are named Benny and Joon - after the movie titled "Benny and
Joon". I'm not sure why they're named those names - neither of them
have the same personality as the characters in the movie - but Benny
is MUCH cuter than the Benny in the movie! (Sorry, Johnny Depp! LOL)
But the names do seem to fit. What's weird is that their names were
Bruno and Roxie at their previous owner's. They didn't come to their
names and didn't really care. They've only been here for a week and
they recognize and come to their new names - that is, if they're not
too busy playing or getting into trouble!
That being said, a name is truly a sacred thing - for animals as well
as people. Everyone deserves a good, well-thought out name. It's like
having a new baby - you want him or her to have a perfect and
appropriate name to match who they are and who they're going to be!
