Ideally you should take him to see your vet. But that being said I just
went through a "flu" or "Cold" situation with my ferrets last month.
The first vet prescribed an antibiotic, which they didn't respond to
very quickly. The second vet offered a suggestion to use children's
NON- alcohol, non-drowsy Robitussin cough suppressant. Which I
administered (1/4 tsp) 2 to 3 times in a 24 hour period and saw very
good results with. It gave them almost immediate relief from the
coughing they were doing.
DO NOT give ferrets Ibuprofen (Advil) or Acetominophen (Tylenol) -
ever! Personally I wouldn't give a ferret aspirin either.
Even if you opt to give Samson the cough medicine, he may need more
medicinal help to get rid of the bug that started him coughing in
the first place- which would likely mean a broad spectrum antibiotic
prescribed by a vet.
Since pneumonia is a real concern for ferrets and they are so good at
disguising what ails them - a trip to your vet is ALWAYS advisable for
respiratory troubles.
Hope he gets well soon!
Cheers,
Kim
