Thank you Diane, Eleanor & Michele for the reminder that it has already
been a year since the arrival of the crew of rescued DKM ferrets from
OHIO.
My hubby & I drove to NY to meet up with Susan to collect a bunch
going to Massachusetts. It was a 5.5 hour ride full of excitement &
anticipation to meet the DMKs.
Once there we were amazed at the little faces -in the carriers just
peering out wondering their fate.
We chatted then hugged Susan for her help in our transport and off we
went back home. We had a couple poofs along the way home and quickly
aired the SUV and probably blindsided anyone behind us with the odor
of Au De POOF.
We arrived home @ 11:00 pm through a brief rainstorm to find our
Shelter friends waiting excitedly in the driveway and proceeded to
load all the carriers in our kitchen to further inspect the kids. WOW!
They were beautiful big boys (one tiny girl) and very curious. Diane,
Michele and Jim quickly loaded the kids up and headed back to their
destinations.
We decided to keep 3 boys-(two were a bonded pair and one single). We
felt they had been through enough and had room and proceeded to name
them Dylan, Taylor & Harley.
After a night of rest, they were introduced to a floor, A SOLID FLOOR
that had no animals chewing at their feet. They stepped out- stepped
back in and we allowed them all the time they wanted to test it. Their
home now had a huge double playpen surrounding it and we let them be
for a day or two only talking gently and filling food & water. Then we
learned- OMG what a bite these scared kids could give. Once they got a
taste of Ferretone, we were able to coax them out and they eventually
taught us well that Ferretone was to be served on a silver platter
before any touching was to be had.
Over the next few weeks we slowly interacted with them more & more.
Their coats changed from scruffy orange-brown to a nice sable and their
nails were trimmed & ears clean & mite free. They were neutered (not
descented as suggested) and had their very first set of shots over a
3 week period . What a joyful day of happy tears the first time they
dooked & danced. We will never forget !
They have learned to play, enjoy occasional N-bones, give kisses and
come to us when called.
It was & still is such a joy to see them dance, play, sleep and
interact with others. They have turned out to be the sweetest kids
on the block.
WE want to again personally thank Susan, Trina, Cyndi, Lori, Lisa, Lisa
and the many others who had ANY participation in the rescue of these
kids. What a fine bunch that worked together with one goal in mind-
SAVING FERRETS & helping them toward a better life- a REAL LIFE once
denied to them at the breeder) one NOW FILLED WITH LOVE, JOY, PLENTY
OF FOOD, CLEAN WATER AND EXCELLENT BEDDING IN WHICH TO SLEEP IN.
We all are truly blessed by this experience. They are still with us and
have bonded with Mika- my boy from Scarlett and what a sappy, silly
bunch worry free of fuzzballs they are.
