Have you tried taking a Q-tip and dipping it in vinegar and swabbing
out the metal tube and ball on the cap. Sometimes minerals built up,
especially in hard water, and you need to clean it. They prevent the
ball from fitting securely.

I have my own well, and I have hard water. I have to do this every
now and again.
