I replied to the person who asked about this in person. I wish to
share all of this with you. I talked to a vet and this was his reply:
The short answer is yes. MRSA is becoming more of an issue with
animals. As far as we are aware, when animals get infected it is from a
person carrying the MRSA rather than the animal carrying it. In people,
the MRSA is carried without problems in the nasal tract and skin. It is
only when there is a surgical wound that it becomes a problem. As far
as I am aware, no studies have been done specifically to see if ferrets
carry the bacteria .I have not seen a ferret with an MRSA infected
wound
(I have seen cats, dogs and rats with it), but certainly if the ferret
has a non-healing wound I would consider sending a swab to see if MRSA,
or other resistant bug is there.
