Hi All,
Falstaff is 1 year old and started going to bed early for 2 consecutive
days. He would come out normal and play normal. His mom was assuming he
was eating, drinking & pooping normal because he lives with 4 others.
Nothing looked out of the ordinary except going back to sleep earlier
than the others.
On day 3, mom came home from work and found him completely lethargic on
the bottom of the cage. She picked him up. He wouldn't wake up so she
put Karo syrup on his gums. At that time he drank water out of a bowl.
Within a few more minutes she rushed him to the vet.
They immediately did a blood glucose and it was 194. Also at the vet
his feet swelled and there was a noticeable welt on one side of his
chest. They put him on oxygen right away; then took x-rays, an
ultrasound and a full blood work up (which will be back Wednesday). The
x-ray showed a fuzzy upper abdominal; and the ultrasound was normal.
They tried iv fluids, steroids (which the swelling on the front feet
went down and the welt disappeared), pain meds, antibiotics but got no
response from him.
He also continued to heat up and his fever spiked at 106.
On day 4 his temp is down to 103.2. He is still on all above meds and
is now licking minor amounts of a/d.
His rear feet are bruised/purple.
He has urinated and is also leaking a clear fluid from unknown source
(all that's in his cage is him, water bowl, food bowl and litter pan)
Again, awaiting blood results, but VERY baffled on what is going on.
Pending blood results, Falstaff's mom doesn't know what to do.
Do you have any suggestions? Have you ever experienced this?
Please feel free to email me and I can get it to the owner. It's a
tough situation for her and she's really torn up about this.
Thanks so much,
Michele
