<http://www.fsis.usda.gov/News_&_Events/recall_027_2009_release/index.asp> >Oregon Firm Recalls Ground Beef Products Due To Possible E. coli >O157:H7 Contamination The shiga toxin that is produced by some types of E. coli, including this species, has been fatal to ferrets and when not fatal such E. coli infections can cause permanent kidney damage in ferrets. (It is also dangerous for a range of other species including humans, and although cooking can affect the bacteria the bigger risk is from the toxin which can remain even with cooking.)
