Leah:
Pred is metabolized by the ferret's system within about 8 hours. If you
only give it to him every 12 hours, then he has approximately a 4 hour
window twice daily when his body is without the protection of the Pred
to fight off the extra insulin that it produces. His Blood Glucose then
will dip and he will have no energy.
I would strongly suggest that you divide his daily total dosage of Pred
into 3 doses, 8 hours apart, rather than 2 doses, 12 hours apart. Also,
make sure that he has food available to him all the time.
Insulinoma is a progressive disease. It only gets worse. Thus, his
daily TOTAL dosage of pred will have to increase over time. A BG level
of 70 is still on the low side, and he should probably be getting
enough Pred daily to maintain a level of 80 or higher. 90 - 110 is
the 'normal' range.
Finally, if he's getting Prednisone, not Prednisolone, then you should
switch to Prednisolone. It is easier for their body to metabolize and
use, and easier on the liver.
