Howdy!
I don't post often, but I do read almost every post. I missed quite
a few, though, while I was down without power and internet and such
for two weeks plus thanks to that little ol' storm called "Ike" that
decided to WAY overstay its welcome here in these parts. Yes, I live
in Galveston, Texas -- you might have heard a bit about it recently.
If not, well, then, my condolences; you probably live in a cave (but
then, you can't read this either...) (Thought if you live in a cave,
you're probably better off than we've been recently...)
I have a friend who lives not far from here -- a bit up the road a
piece-- who runs a ferret rescue. Now, this gal managed to get the
ferrets safely out before Evil Ike went on a drunken rampage around
here -- but she lost everything. Her home, her vehicle, her furniture,
her worldly goods; and she could seriously use some help.
Many of you know her. Vicki Montgomery. Some of you know her well;
others don't. Many of you like her; and some of you don't like her
much, but I'd like to remind you of something. Whatever your politics,
whatever your flavor of beliefs, it doesn't matter whether you love
or hate her: This is about the ferrets. And the rescue. There really
aren't many rescues in this geographic area, and if Vicki were to fold
up her tent and move on, we'd be in serious shape. Serously SAD shape.
Now, I've been to Vicki's home. A few times, in fact. At any given
time, she's housed anywhere from 20-50 ferrets that I'm AWARE of, and
she's always done it pretty much on her own, using her own money. She
isn't supported, as far as I'm aware, by any of the ferret assistance
groups, like SOS. But those ferrets have ALWAYS been well fed, clean,
received the necessary health care, annual vaccinations, treats (yes,
TREATS), and had good, decent cages, and plenty of room to play. They
are HAPPY ferrets. I know; I've adopted a couple of them. The first,
Tucker, we adopted three years ago; the other, Kitty, we adopted early
this year. Both were very healthy, well fed, groomed, and happy little
furbutts -- but they needed a forever home, and we happily provided it.
We never would have met them and been able to open our home -- and our
hearts -- if Vicki hadn't been running her rescue, Tricks & Treats.
She's sometimes a bit cantankerous when it comes to accepting help, but
it's not because she doesn't care. Quite the opposite, in fact. She
cares a HELL of a lot about these ferrets, and she loves to find them
good, decent, loving, Forever Homes, so she's extremely picky. She
doesn't want a lot of rebounding -- people who adopt and then get rid
of the ferrets -- so she takes alot of time and trouble to make certain
she's adopting to the right people. She's the same way about foster
homes; and she's the same way about accepting help.
Now, Vicki has no idea that I'm posting this, and I might get lambasted
when she finds out. Tough. I'm a big girl, and I can handle it.
What I *can't* handle, though, is the ridiculous vultures who seem to
be taking delight in feeding off of her misfortunes elsewhere in the
ferret community. To those people, I say, with the utmost sincerity:
SHUT UP AND GO BACK TO YOUR HOLES. Feed off some carrion elsewhere.
STOP kicking people when they are down -- like Alexandra. Vicki, and
many others who have come before. If you're that bored, learn to READ
and go to the library, check out a few books. Go do some community
service. WHATEVER. Just STOP being utter snakes about people when
they need a little help!
Right now, Vicki needs HELP, not harassment. Julie set up a raffle
to benefit Vicki's rescue, and she needs to sell more tickets. I
personally have bought some, but my husband and I, too, are trying to
pick up after Ike's rapscallion rampage, and we don't have much money
right now. But Vicki and Julie and the few who have helped cannot raise
money alone. Where are you *giving*, kind-hearted folks, who come out
in droves when one of the "popular" people in the community needs help?
Forget any differences you might have with Vicki, and PLEASE, I'm
asking you, PLEASE help. It's not about the woman: It's about the
FERRETS. This community, this AREA, NEEDS Vicki and Tricks & Treats.
It doesn't need the fighting, the insults, the backbiting, and the
CRAP she's recently been getting.
Here's the info on the raffle:
