Regarding ferrets and apartments -- ferrets are perfect pets for apartment
dwellers as they don't take up much space.  It can be problematic if your
landlord doesn't allow pets, however -- something worth investigating in
advance.  I have a friend whose daughter has had to move more than once
because she did not tell her landlord about her pets and was evicted once
he/she found out.  The plus side is that many landlords do not mind
ferrets since they can be caged while you are out -- and of course the
ferrets don't mind caging, as they are sleeping most of the time, anyway.
My husband and I lived in an apartment with ferrets for 3 years -- not a
problem.  In fact, moving to our townhouse was a little traumatic for us,
since they had so much more space to romp in -- and thus that much more
space to have to ferret-proof!
 
The best overall book for ferrets, especially novices, is "Ferrets," by
Chuck and Fox Morton (Barron's, 1985) -- in my opinion, naturally.  TFH
has a good half-dozen ferret books, but many of them are very superficial.
The best of the TFH books is "Ferrets in Your Home," by Wendy Winstead,
but the price is a bit steep.
