I have watched Ferris, Loki and BART! all do the same thing to their
water bowls at home. I always thought they were only playing in the
water, but I finally saw a possible reason for this action. When we
have been in the woods, I have seen the boys go over to a creek,
rivulet or small water seep and employ the same exact water "sweeping"
and pawing motion. It definitely serves to clear away debris and bring
more water to the top in shallow areas. I think it is an instinct, but
has become a way of having some fun when they're in the house or cage.
Just my theory.
