Those who want to stick to whole or mostly whole foods while adding
calcium and Omega 3 Fatty Acids can consider giving small amounts of
sardines with their bones. Large amounts of certain marine fish or
crustaceans (esp squid) over time backfire by causing Nutritional
Steatus (Yellow Fat Disease) BUT smaller amounts are healthy, even if
there is odor, and can promote better nutritional balance. In fact,
if needed, it can even be used as a sick food for a ferret; it's not
ideal but it made all the difference for a fussy-when-sick one of ours
who otherwise would not have gotten over a particularly nasty hump in
her road of life.
