When we have a prescription filled, we trust our doctors, vets and
pharmacists are accurate. However, they can and do make mistakes like
all of us.
It's a very hard lesson at the expense of a little ferret that I did
not double check a label on a bottle of prednisolone and it resulted in
her death. The concentration was more than double what it should have
been and I did not realize it until a couple of kids had bg's way too
high. This was a refill, not a new prescription so I assumed it was the
same as the others had been. Fortunately the other kids are all ok now
but a couple had me very worried for a couple of days. I don't remember
where I first learned that adding canned pumpkin can/will lower glucose
but it helped. Sadly, insulin didn't work for the little girl.
I hope everyone will realize it can and does happen so always double
check. It wouldn't be a bad idea when your doctor or vet writes a
prescription that we question exactly what is prescribed, what the mg
or ml is and the correct dosage.
Best to all and especially the little ones,
Jackie
