I've had ferrets for approaching 15 years now, and this is a new
problem for me.
As a little background, I never had a ferret use the litter box. My
first ferret used newspaper on the bottom layer of her cage, and this
has progressed to Equine Pine on the entire bottom layer of the cage.
Not the best option, but it was working fine until recently.
Starting in late spring last year, we had a very sick little guy, and
an older somewhat-senile old female. These two both had problems
getting to the litter when they had to go. We cleaned up after them,
and the little female still will go on the shelf where their food and
water are.
However, now our other guys are going everywhere. The top shelf of
their new cage isn't accessible to the elderly female, but there are
poopies and potty there. Until this move, we thought it was all our
little Kissy, but we now know it isn't.
There's no way to know how long they've been doing this, and we're not
home during the day to watch. When they're out, they're pretty good
about using the paper in the corner. In the new place, we let them
pick the corner, then put paper down.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop them doing this? It's
not life-threatening, but really annoying. We change their litter
regularly, so it's not a "dirty-box" issue.
