More information - the movie "The Golden Compass" is based on a book by
the same name, the first of a trilogy by Philip Pullman. Pantalaimon
(Pan) is Lyra's daemon, and takes on lots of forms throughout the
series, because children's daemons can do that. His preferred sleeping
form is as an ermine draped across Lyra's neck.

I wish the moviemakers hadn't given Pan such human features, but since
he has a speaking role, maybe it couldn't be helped.
