Ah - you have encountered the 'geek'. I am quite familiar with these
odd creatures because the world I inhabit is populated with them i.e.,
academia. Not to suggest that all academics are geeks or vice versa,
but there is a preponderance in and around academic institutions. Easy
to recognize by the vacuous looks as you pass them on the streets -
busy with some significant internal dialogue, they do not notice you or
the external world for that matter. They come in a few variations - the
classic geek, nerd-geek and the nerd (geekiness as a recessive trait).
The latter two tend to exhibit a higher degree of awareness.
I can absolutely guarantee that if your fuzzbutts had moving parts or
operated through a remote device, Jeff would have noticed. Indeed would
have been intrigued - until he figured out how they worked, then it
would be on to the next challenge....
