The ferrets were OUT of the home for the fumigation, right? And they
will stay out till it is all dry and vented, and maybe even washed
and dried afterward depending on what was used, right?
Your roommate may have to move out if you hold the lease, or you move
out if he does. He should get a hepa filter air cleaner (Environaire is
among the ones recommended by pulmonologists and allergists; I think of
those by name simply because we have them) and NOT get a free-standing
electrostatic filter because those tend to create ozone (though current
ones produce less than earlier models current research indicates that
even low levels of ozone are hard on lungs). If that doesn't work you
need to know that there is a documented case of a man who developed
anaphylactic reactions to ferrets who almost died. Allergies to ferrets
are rare but they can be severe.
Make sure that the roommate is not reacting to a litter, shampoo, or
other product rather than the ferrets! That seems to happen a lot.
Check the foods and supplements fed to make sure there is not a food
ingredient to which the roommate is very allergic which may be
circulating in powder form.
Is your roommate allergic to cats? Many who have reported allergies to
ferrets are allergic to cats, and often the individuals seem to react
most to whole males or to males with adrenal disease (which in some
ways, including the musk characteristics under hyper hormonal aspects
of adrenal disease can resemble being whole).
