My thoughts would be to take our animals with us - if it isn't safe for
us it obviously isn't safe for any being that depends on us for their
safety. I wouldn't worry about where to go with our companions, only
that we remove them, with ourselves, from the dangerous area.

And don't forget to take plenty of food and bottled water in case you
are gone for longer than expected.
