What a coincidence!
Yesterday my two cunning little pests made a break for freedom.
I live in a 120 yr old house that was not built with ferret master
escapers in mind. The ferret room is at the back of the house and was
not originally part of the house except as an outbuilding. The previous
owner had knocked through the brick wall to make a doorway from the
house and what had been the open side of this building was finished
with a timber wall and window. He was not a master builder!! and over
the years rain etc had penetrated below the window sill and rotted the
timber. The first time I knew about this weakness was yesterday when
the next door neighbour knocked on my door and said that there was a
ferret loose in the garden of the house next to him. I said well it
can't be mine they can't get out (ha-ha, never underestimate your
ferrets). I recovered my Suki with a squeaky toy and put her in her
cage while I looked for the exit point, but where was Sugar the other
miscreant, yes she was missing too.
I searched my garden squeaking away like crazy and after 10 minutes
a soaking wet, filthy albino emerged from a steep slope that leads to
a stream that is my boundary. What a lucky ferret, the stream was a
rageing torrent after three days of very heavy rain.
So that was my weekend spent referretproofing.
Some years ago my little sable Sue (now passed) escaped through an open
door and was missing for 3 days. She too was discovered by a neighbour
when he put some food down in the kitchen for his cat and a few minutes
later his cat ran to him looking fearfully behind her, Sue was eating
the cat food and had chased the cat away!. She had been sleeping under
the mans cooker and living off the cats food. She was looking plump
and well fed so had probably been there for some time unknown to him.
Tony, Sugar and Suki (It wasn't us, honest).
In memory of Sally and Sue
