This morning, we had to say goodbye to another of the throw-away
ferrets that we see all too often.
Angel came to us just over 2 years ago, after her owner stepped on her
and injured her back. He took her to the vet to have her euthanized, as
he didn't want to deal with her. It seems that she had little or no
control over her bladder and bowels, a result of being stepped on, and
she was making a mess in his house. It turned out that the vet he took
her to, was our shelter vet. Dr. Katie convinced him to turn her over
to us, so at least she had a chance.
Angel came to us without anyone knowing what the outcome would be, but
we were going to give it a try. We put Angel on some steroids for the
inflammation, shelter mom did physical therapy on her back legs, and
cleaned up a lot of messes. With lots of help, Angel was able to get
some use of her back legs, and could get around the house with the rest
of the kids. She could climb up on the bed, and run thru the tubes when
playing with the other ferts. There was no stopping her when she was in
one of her moods.
Last week, Angel started acting different. She was stumbling more,
flopping down on the floor after only a few steps, and just not acting
like herself. We put her on some Pred, anti-biotics and plenty of duck
soup. Nothing that we did, seemed to make any difference, and she
seemed to be uncomfortable.
I took her in on Tuesday morning to see our vet, and to see what could
be done for our little girl. After x-rays, listening, poking and
prodding, our vet told us that she had a mass up around her liver and
lungs. After realizing that she was uncomfortable, and that there was
nothing we could do for her, we decided to let her rest. I told Angel
about the Rainbow Bridge, gave her kisses to give to our other kids
when she met them, and gave her the rest she seemed to be asking for.
Angel was a bright spot in our lives for just over 2 years, but will be
with us forever. She will be missed by us and her Aunt Jennifer and
Aunt Kathleen.
Until we meet again, my Angel Cakes.
