We have had to do that by hand.  We didn't do it due to the mess, though,
we did it because we had a ferret who had a "fur"ball that turned out
when checked to actually be mostly made up of fake sheep fleece (not
polar fleece which barely sheds).
 
Two surprise benefits of covering the fake fleece with sheet material
are that the bedding cleans more easily with less lint in the washer
and drier catchers, and the beds last longer.
