Some of you may know of Ferrets-N-Limbo shelter. They recently closed
their doors. To my heartfelt surprise, we received a cheque from their
former president, Michelle Alverson for the remainder of their leftover
funds. I was very surprised, but thankful for their kind donation. If
ANYONE has her phone number, I would really like to thank her in person
(well, on the phone anyway).
Her cheque may have come at the best time ever. Every time we come upon
a long holiday weekend, my shelter volunteers and vets hold their breath.
Over the last 2 years, ALL of our large scale rescues have been on
holiday weekends. When speaking with one of our vets on Friday, she
left the conversation with "...AND, don't be doing any big rescues this
weekend!"
Well, she may have jinxed us.
30 ferrets were removed from an animal mill in Ontario. Along with dogs,
birds and other animals, the ferrets are spread out among a few different
shelters. The last time the SPCA did a rescue, we were called on to take
the "Canada Day" ferrets. I don't know for sure if we will get these
ones, after all, we don't exactly have the best relationship with the
SPCA after the New Year's Day rescue (1998), Paris/Christmas rescue
(2004) and the Easter rescue (2005).
However, if they need our help, in we will be there. The problem lies
in our cruelty laws in Canada. The owner of these back-yard bred ferrets
may get them back. Though the vet that saw them advises against
returning them, our laws aren't what they should be.
I'll keep you all updated and thank you in advance for your words of
wisdom and support.
