You should not have any or very little ferret smells. We have 34 ferrets
in our playroom. The only ones you smell (from people coming into our
home to adopt) are the undescented ones, which occasional poof. You
need to do the following:
1.) High back litter pan-clean often meaning everyday scooping. Use
woodpellets or horse stall pellets to cut down the cost of everyday
changing. We Sift (woodpellet sifter) the sawdust out and reuse the
pellets.
2.) Give your ferrets baths only 1-2 times per year (washes off oils on
their coats and makes them produce it again. This causes the smells)
3.) Do not spray your ferrets with fancy sprays and deodorizers (Dries
out coats in alot of cases and make them produce more oils.......leading
to smells)
4.)Change your bedding. Keep lots of clean, fresh bedding in the cage.
Change every 2 weeks. Use towels in the bottom of your cage and on the
levels. This helps to absorb the oils and then you wash it away that way.
5.) Feed GOOD quality foods. Nice cheaper food, but still good quality
is Max Kitten by Walmart (Black and Purple Bag-Their Brand) Or Purina
One Kitten. If you feed cheap food, loaded with corn you will get alot
of ferret poop and smell. Corn is added to any food to make the food
cheaper for the company to produce. It is a filler, just runs through
anyone who eats it and does nothing for the animal/human. The company is
able to make more money off the consumer by adding corn to the product.
Check the ingredients. Chicken should be your first! Or Turkey.
Hope that helps!
