In our experience, about 12 implants in 6 ferrets, we have had very good
luck with the Melatonin.  Only one didn't show marked improvement within
the first couple of weeks.  She regrew most of her hair and put on weight
but the hair was kind of thin.  We have also tried Lupron a year or two
ago and saw no change in 3 ferrets.  All of which later got the surgery
and 2 are still with us and doing great.
 
I know another shelter in our state has also had great success with
Melatonin implants.
