You mentioned Dr Cathy Johnson-Delaney's article reporting lethargy after
a melatonin implant in a petite (560 gram), geriatric female ferret.
The rest of the story is, this ferret was also sedated with ketamine
and acepromazine for the implant and to collect bloood. Ketamine and
acepromazine is an injectable anesthesia that can cause prolong recovery
and kidney damage. I would suspect the lethargy was related to the
administration of ketamine and ace and not to the melatonin implant.
Hope that clears up some of the confusion,
Jerry Murray, DVM
