The last B&W episode (Season 1 DVD) of the Wild, Wild West has ferrets in
it. This of the one where a bacterium that causes 48 hours of rigidity
(so the people are just standing there not moving) is involved. Jim West
speaks to the ferrets in the lab, and a gang leader rubs bacon on the
face of Artie (That actor was Jewish, too, so it can't have been an
appreciated choice.) and tells the character that the ferrets (which
are never identified by name) are hungry. Meanwhile, in the background
a little of the motion and noise tells anyone who knows ferrets that the
three in the cage are very happy.
