In NJ if you want to make a complaint about unsuitable conditions
regarding ferrets in a pet store, the complaint should be addressed to
NJ Dept of Fish and Game. Call 609.292.9591, Jane Cheryl should be able
to assist you.
Ferrets are covered under F&G in NJ as "exotic species" and in general
the conditions have to be beyond bad before anything will be done. The
BEST way to get F&G to act is to catch the store selling ferrets without
issuing a permit. That's because they can fine the store and make money
on it. Enforcement only has a small handful of officers for the entire
state, and I'll be honest, ferrets in pet stores are very, very, very
low on their list of priorities.
If you can PROVE inhumane treatment, and your idea of inhumane is
probably VERY different fromt the legal definition, you have a chance.
Want to really make a change? Make an appointment to speak to your
state representatives about changing the laws.
