I think a lot depends on the agent and the state you live in.  I have 14
ferrets, and 4 dogs, including an Akita and a Chow.  These two breeds are
supposedly on the "vicious dog" list.  Some insurance companies will
allow you to have a policy with them but will charge extra due to what
they perceive as an 'extra liability'.
 
We have our home owner's insurance through State Farm, and are not
charged any extra for the ferrets or the dogs.  I know of some people
who have been turned down by State Farm due to owning ferrets, so that's
why I think it just depends on the agent and/or state you're in.
