I just responded to Cuca's owner, but wanted to also make a quick post on
the fml for any new subscribers. Hindend weakness (when the ferrets legs
slip out from under them more than normal) is a sign of low blood sugar
caused by Insulinoma.
You actually need to avoid giving her sugary treats (which cause the
blood sugar level to rise and fall rapidly) and make sure she gets a
ferret food with lots of protein. Take her to the vet for a fasting
blood glucose test. You'll need to take away her food 3-4 hours before
the tests. It's a simple procedure where they draw a bit of blood and
have it tested. If her blood glucose is low (below 80) they will
probably put her on pedia pred (Prednisolone). It is given orally,
usually twice a day. Please call your vet right away, you can easily
control the insulinoma, but without the medicine she could seizure. I
have a ferret who has been treated for insulinoma for over two years.
She is on meds and gets her BG level tested every couple of months to
see if we need to raise her meds.
