I agree about the PETsMART problem. I work for Petco, and no matter
how many times I have complained about how the ferrets were shipped,
my GM told me there's nothing to do. I asked her if we could order
from a different breeder, she said that they used to and their shipping
procedures were worse.

I'm the Small Animal Specialist at Petco, meaning it's my job to take
care of rats, mice, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas,
and - you guess it - ferrets. I have spent so much time training ferrets
not to bite or teaching them to do kisses. I make sure all the animals
are taken to the vet if they so much as sneeze, I make sure they get
their medications, etc.

And, on top of that, Petco recently decided that if any employee feels
that the customer will not be taking care of the companion animal (and
that includes birds, reptiles and fish), we can refuse the sale. And
believe me, I've had to refuse the sale of almost every type of animal
in the store.

Now, I don't know if PETsMART's policies are like that, but I do know
that you can't say big corporations are always to blame. There used to
be a pet store near my Petco (before we put them out of business) and
they had multiple ferrets in 10-gallon tanks. There's a pet store in
upstate NY that had a ferret who's ears were black with wax (the ferrets
at my store get routine ear cleanings and nail clippings).

Well, anyway the point was that... I agree, and I'm glad someone else
finally said something.
