Hello everyone,

Bob Naylor, our lobbyist, spoke with the Governor's staff recently about
his veto of SB 89 and was told that the Governor wants to be proactive on
the ferret issue but that SB 89 was just too bureaucratic to sign into
law. I think we have to assume that some kind of environmental document
is anticipated by the Governor's office but it is unclear at this point
if a full-blown EIR or a less time consuming and costly document would be
accepted. Since the chinchilla, water buffalo and camel were removed
from the same list the ferret is in without any environmental documents,
and because they were determined to be domesticated, we believe no study
is necessary.

In any case, all is not lost on the ferret front. It seems that the
Governor's Office wants to move this issue forward which is terrific
news. We'll have to see what shape that interest takes but I think we
should all be encouraged by this information.

Many of you have asked how you can help our issue and one way is to help
our dedicated webmaster Scott Beisner who has paid for our web site
himself for years now. You can sponsor the website by donating to its
monthly service fee, a mere $20.00. Go to www.ferretnews to see how to
help Scott maintain the best ferret legalization site on the internet.

On a personal note, I need to return my attention to my work after months
on this issue but will be on hand to represent us in whatever way is
needed and to help our lobbyist with the work he performs on this issue.
I will not be able to respond to individual requests for updates so if
you are not on the CA UPDATE list is strongy urge you to sign up via our
web site www.ferretnews.org. If you want to help me, and enjoy some
really unique ferret photography, consider purchasing my 2005 ferret
calendar, Ferret Music, from The Ferret Company, www.ferretcompany.com.
