Our family has just become owned by two young ferrets, Kenya and Fiona.
We are first-timers!  We have a Midwest cage (size 36" x 24" x 48") that
I have modified to be safer for them.  (No long falls possible)
 
The cage, however, has a base with a deep channel that has become a
catchall for food and litter.  It's difficult to vacuum that out not to
mention wasteful of the dry food that Kenya insists on digging out.  I'm
tempted to remove the base and put down a piece of vinyl flooring over
the carpet and set the cage on top however I'm not sure that would be
safe for the girls.  They can get quite wild and I'm afraid they could
move or tip the cage accidentally.  Does anyone have any opinions on my
idea?  Have you modified the base of a Midwest cage in some other way?
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.
