It sounds like you have a chordoma. When the ferret is an embryo, a
groove forms in it's surface that develops into the spine and a lot of
other parts. If part of the cells don't convert they may develope into a
chordoma. It can be in a lot of places but the tip of the tail is most
common. The cure is to remove it plus a couple of joints above it. It's
hardly noticable when healed. There is an article and picture here.
