We had a big scare Sunday night. Shortly after my son let the babies out
for playtime, we noticed our little blaze(Mitsy) was dragging her hind
end. She is normalled a VERY wired weasel. Immediately I picked her up
and gently started feeling everything in her legs, feet, and lower back,
expecting her to cry out if I touched something that hurt. Being deaf,
she is VERY vocal.
Nothing. All she did was squirm as usual. Back on the floor, same
dragging. She was trying to use her back legs, but couldn't. Yet she
was pulling herself all over the room on the carpet. As she did not
appear to be hurting and acting normal in all other aspects, I decided to
wait until the morning and see how she was.
Monday morning - same thing. Off to the vet we go. Of course I am sick
to my stomach over the possibilities. Our vet, Dr Edwards in Brockport,
is VERY ferret knowledgeable. She acts the same way for him. I actually
had to scruff her in order for him to check her out for injuries, and she
was still squirming. She is the only ferret I have ever known that does
not go totally limp when scruffed.
He could not find anything either. They tested her sugar - normal(thank
God). He sent us home with some cortisone saying she must have hurt
herself. I gave her some and put her in the cage for the night as she
was exhausted from all the excitement at the vets. I had rearranged the
cage so she would not have to try to climb at all, and don't you know she
pulled herself to the top? We have a 4 level Super Pet cage, so that was
a huge task.
Tuesday morning - somewhat better, but still a big struggle to get
around. More cortisone. 10 minutes later - yes 10 minutes - she is
walking across the room! Not her usually running and jumping, but not
dragging anymore! This morning (Wednesday) after about the same amount
of time - she bounced and ran so fast I had to run myself to catch her!
I am going to cut her back on the cortisone starting today instead of
waiting a few days if this is how she is tonight too.
Their resiliance is truely amazing! Mitsy doll - you truely have a
guardian angel watching over you!
