I've found peppermint extract or oil to work well.  Put some on a cotton
ball, and wipe all your baseboards, and around the base of the ferrets
cage.  I found I needed to reapply every few days for the first couple
weeks when I had a severe infestation, but then could go to once a week,
then once every 2 or 3 weeks to keep them away.
 
This worked very well for me for the tiny ants; don't know if it would
work as well for large carpenter ants.
