It is important to understand why sub-q's are given in the first place
and each case should be discussed with a ferret knowledgeable vet.
 
Sub-q's given to a ferret with undiagnosed heart failure can cause the
situation to worsen or even death of the ferret.  Some ailments can be
delayed in diagnosis by improper use of sub-q's.
 
There are different mixes of fluids and not all ferrets require the same
kind of fluids.  The type of fluid required for a specific ferret needs
also to be determined through consultation with a vet.
 
Sub q's should only be administered to ferrets under vet care that have
had it fully explained to the owner the circumstances by which fluids
should be given.  Any person who is interested in learning how to do
administer ferrets, should have their vet show them how to do it
properly.
 
There are many of us who have saved the lives of ferrets by knowing and
understanding the circumstances by which fluids can be administered
safely.  But if for any reason you are unsure whether or not you should
give a ferret fluids subcutaneously, it is best not to do so and get the
ferret to the vet as soon as possible.
