Ants will not cross a chalk line, but I don't know how ferrets would
react to the chalk.  But you can always buy yourself some good
old-fashioned, non-toxic sidewalk chalk and draw a line!  I've done
this in my kitchen (no problems with the ferret area) and it works
like a charm every year.  I've got my mom doing it at her house, too,
because the ants love her bird food.
