A kitchen scale or postal scale works for me.  The digital ones are quite
accurate and easy to read, and a small blob of Nutri-Cal or peanut butter
on the platform will keep the ferret in place long enough to get the job
done.  Personally, though, I think your fish scale system sounds great!

I weigh healthy ferrets once a week when I do their toenails.  Ferrets
who are ill (or are suspected of being ill) are weighed daily, at about
the same time every day.
