Hi Crystal,
 
Some people recommend sterile potting soil.  I find it messy.  One thing
you could try is dry butterbeans.  They're large enough that the ferrets
can't eat them (some people use pinto beans but I'd be afraid they are
small enough to swallow).  Just a thought.
