To be fair (hmm do we WANT to be fair to Petco?), it is also possible
that the bulletin board site was just experiencing problems at that time,
and you would have been unable to get on no matter what IP you logged in
with.  I've had a similar thing happen (don't recall what site) where
every user id I picked it told me was already taken.  I tried again a
couple hours later and had no problems.
 
It would be interesting to try again and see what happens.  If you do let
us know!
